Friday Fish Fry: Local Favorites

Hillside

What says Northwoods more than a Friday fish fry? According to the locals, six of Sayner-Star Lake’s restaurants are a must-try on Friday night. Stillwater’s, The Hillside Tavern and Grill, Mar-Li’s, Murmuring Waters Lodge, Sayner Pub and the Clearview Supper Club each have unique offerings that keep, not only the locals, but tourists coming back for years. Why you might ask?

Stillwaters – Star Lake

If All You Care to Eat is your thing, check out Stillwaters “AYCE” Fish Fry or their baked Cold Water Alaskan Cod. These meals promise to fill you up with not only mouth-watering cod but french fries, coleslaw, rye bread, and homemade mac & cheese as well! Not feeling the french fries?  Try their potato pancakes. While they have a limited menu on Fridays, they still have options for everyone from walleye and perch to bluegill and breaded shrimp, as well as a few sandwiches and smaller portions for those with a smaller appetite.

Murmuring Waters Lodge  – St. Germain

Enjoy the friendly environment located on the shores of Lost Lake!!  Fish Fry Fridays at Murmuring Waters Lodge will delight with an array of fish choices such as walleye, perch, blue gill and catfish.  Try their combo platter of walleye and shrimp for a duo taste.  There’s a great selection of homemade sides to choose from including mac and cheese, baked beans, German potato salad as well as the traditional french fries.  You can choose between table seating, a spot at the bar, or enjoy the weather at a picnic table overlooking Lost Lake.

Hillside Tavern & Grill – Sayner

Now, if you’re looking for a cozy atmosphere and a salad bar, then the Hillside Tavern and Grill is the place to check out. While known for their pizza, that’s not all they have to offer. On Fridays you can get their classic Cod Fish Fry with french fries, coleslaw and rye bread with the option to upgrade to potato pancakes or add on their soup and salad bar. For those not looking for the classic Cod Fish Fry, they also have a Hand Breaded Walleye or Perch (in season), Rustic Italian Cod or Shrimp dinners as well as their full menu.

Mar-Li’s – Sayner

Can’t decide between fried or baked? Try Mar-Li’s Fisherman’s Platter where you receive two pieces of fried haddock, a half portion of baked haddock, potato salad, french fries, rye bread coleslaw, and drawn butter. For those who are indecisive, this offers the best of both worlds for those haddock lovers. Mar-Li’s has their full menu on Fridays (except for their delicious broiled chicken) which also includes perch for those who don’t enjoy haddock.

Sayner Pub – Sayner

Friday night game that you can’t miss? But also having that craving for cod? Check out the Sayner Pub’s Friday Night Fish Fry! Their four-piece cod dinner comes fried, broiled, or blackened with a side of coleslaw and rye bread, as well as your choice of potato salad, chips, french fries, or homemade potato pancakes. With the kitchen open until 10:00 pm, an expansive bar, and twelve TVs, receive the ultimate sports bar experience.

Clearview Supper Club – St. Germain

When in the Northwoods, you have to experience a “Supper Club” setting.  What better way to experience a “Friday Fish Fry” and “Supper Club” in one sitting at Clearview Supper Club.   In a relaxed setting on Big St. Germain Lake, a full menu of fish selections can be found.  Choices of haddock, walleye, catfish and shrimp come with sides of coleslaw, choice of potato and rye bread.  Even mahi mahi or shrimp tacos can be added or be a main course.  Truly a mouth-watering experience.
